Plants in the Center Bed

This is the bed at the center of the sayuyay garden. The center of this bed represents Qwi'li or western red cedar (Thuja plicata), which is at the center of the lives of the Skokomish People. This bed, designed by Evergreen student, Natalie Bower, was constructed of hypertufa and coated with special pigment provided by subiyay, Bruce Miller. The tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), white sage (Salvia apiana), and common sweetgrass (Hierchloe odorata) represent plants traditionally used to bridge the material and spiritual worlds.
